The concept of brightening up people’s day was in
reaction to the negative effect caused by the pandemic. As a large proportion of the
population were restricted to their household, days tend to be repetitive and
dull. The same environment can seem daunting to many, causing them to be less
motivated and leading in some to poor mental health.
The focus on music is linked to my experience of
lockdown, as music helped me to cope and relax within the events of this
pandemic. As I looked further into music as a whole, I realised there were only
a few variations of storage for vinyl records. There was an opportunity to
create a storage unit which was bright and bold, yet still practical.
The product was inspired by Saul Bass’s simplistic design beliefs and Memphis’ design
approach. The contours are based on soundwaves from songs I listened to through
the first lockdown. I aimed to produce a product with a sleek and clean
aesthetic for a modern style, while including a practical use saving space and
the visual display of vinyl records within easy reach.
